Welcome back to One Less Bag, where Spring has officially SPRUNG! As the days grow longer and flowers begin to bloom, it's the perfect time to refresh our homes, habits, and mindsets. This season of renewal is a great opportunity to embrace sustainability and make small changes that have a big impact on the planet.

For the next six weeks, we’ll be sharing a Spring Sustainability Series, bringing you simple, effective ways to celebrate the season while reducing waste and making more eco-conscious choices. From spring cleaning and mindful decluttering to greener outdoor activities and seasonal eating, each post will be packed with practical tips to help you welcome spring the sustainable way.

This week, we’re diving into an essential seasonal ritual: Spring Cleaning the Sustainable Way!

Spring Cleaning the Sustainable Way

Spring cleaning is more than just dusting and decluttering—it’s a chance to refresh your space with an eco-friendly mindset. Instead of relying on chemical-laden cleaners and creating unnecessary waste, here’s how you can make your home sparkle the sustainable way

1. Swap Harsh Chemicals for DIY Natural Cleaners

Traditional cleaning products often contain synthetic chemicals that can harm both your health and the environment. The good news? You can make your own effective, all-natural cleaners using simple, non-toxic ingredients:

  • All-Purpose Cleaner: Mix equal parts white vinegar and water in a spray bottle. Add a few drops of lemon or lavender essential oil for a fresh scent.

  • Scrubbing Paste: Combine baking soda with a little water to form a paste—perfect for scrubbing sinks, tubs, and countertops.

  • Glass Cleaner: Mix 1 cup of water, 1/4 cup of white vinegar, and a teaspoon of cornstarch for streak-free shine on windows and mirrors.

These DIY cleaners are just as powerful as store-bought ones but without the harmful toxins or plastic packaging waste.

2. Declutter Responsibly: Donate, Upcycle, Repurpose

Spring cleaning often means clearing out the old, but before tossing things into the trash, consider more sustainable options

  • Donate: Clothing, furniture, and household goods in good condition can find a second life through local charities, shelters, or thrift stores.

  • Upcycle: Get creative with repurposing! Turn old t-shirts into reusable cleaning rags, or transform glass jars into storage containers.

  • Recycle Smart: Research local recycling programs and drop-off locations for electronics, batteries, and textiles to ensure proper disposal.

By mindfully decluttering, we can reduce landfill waste while giving our items a new purpose.

3. Choose Sustainable Cleaning Supplies

A truly green spring clean isn’t just about what we use—it’s also about what we don’t use. Instead of single-use, plastic-based cleaning products, consider these eco-friendly alternatives

  • Reusable Cleaning Cloths: Swap paper towels for washable cotton rags or microfiber cloths.

  • Compostable Sponges & Brushes: Look for sponges made from plant-based materials and wooden scrub brushes with compostable bristles.

  • Refillable Cleaning Bottles: Reduce plastic waste by purchasing bulk refills or using glass spray bottles for DIY cleaners.

By making these small changes, you can cut down on unnecessary waste and keep your home fresh in a way that’s healthier for both you and the planet.
