Welcome back to One Less Bag, where this week we discuss how education, community, and grassroots action are essential to building a future free from single-use plastics. Recently, Plastech participated in Nourish the Future, a national initiative that empowers science teachers and students to connect classroom learning with real-world sustainability solutions.
Nourishing the Future: Strengthening Community, Science, and Sustainability
At Plastech, we believe that the journey toward reducing pollution and eliminating single-use plastics starts at the grassroots level—with education, collaboration, and genuine community partnerships. That spirit came alive during our recent engagement at “Nourish the Future”, a powerful initiative that’s active across 32 states and guided by a mission we deeply admire.
Nourish the Future is a national education initiative developed by science teachers for science teachers, dedicated to inspiring a network of educators to foster critical thinking, connect students to modern agriculture, and provide science-based resources. At its heart, the program envisions science classrooms as gateways for students to understand where their food comes from—and the importance of sustainable systems that can support both people and the planet.
Plastech’s commitment to zero-plastic, home-compostable alternatives dovetails perfectly with this mission in several key ways:
Connecting students to sustainable systems: By offering compostable solutions, Plastech helps shift the narrative from waste to resourcefulness—reinforcing the scientific principle that everything has a cycle.
Science-informed innovation: Plastech’s product development reflects rigorous science, ensuring that environmental and health impacts are prioritized in every material choice.
Empowering educators and communities: Like Nourish the Future, Plastech believes that real impact happens through inspiring educators and empowering communities to make sustainable choices.
At the event, we had the honor of joining 23 New Jersey high school science teachers, along with distinguished leaders who are making a difference:
NJ Secretary of Agriculture
Senior VP of Environmental Research at Rutgers
Co-Founder of the Jersey Shore STEM Ecosystem & Voya National STEM Fellow
NJ State Teacher of the Year 2023
NABT Genetics Educator of the Year 2022
Directors and leaders from Toms River High School South, Toms River High School North, the Central Ocean Rotary Scholarship Committee, and Nourish the Future Teacher Leaders
Plastech was granted a full hour to present how our products are not only reducing pollution, but also preserving community health by providing practical alternatives to single-use plastics. During this time, we engaged in meaningful discussions—including exploring prospective partnerships with several of the honored attendees on environmental and health projects across New Jersey.
Looking Ahead: Grassroots Impact in Action
The “Nourish the Future” event was more than just a presentation—it was a convergence of like-minded leaders working toward a shared vision: equipping students and communities with the knowledge, tools, and solutions needed to thrive sustainably. Together, we are setting a foundation for lasting change—where science, education, and innovation combine to drive out waste and champion health.
At Plastech, we're proud to be part of this movement, and committed to growing partnerships that educate, empower, and transform—one classroom, one community, one compostable product at a time.
